Montgomery County SPCA

Client: Montgomery County SPCA

Project: Addition and renovation to create a new
Visitor’s Center

Construction Challenge: The Montgomery
County SPCA had a dual problem: First, there
was no quiet place where a person could interact
with a prospective pet. Second, the entrance
to the building was not intuitive or welcoming:
people did not know where to go when they
arrived, and the whole lobby area had a very
institutional atmosphere.

Architectural Solution: A 700 sq. ft. addition
was built off the lobby so that visitors could
have a pleasant environment in which to
“interview” a prospective pet. The room was
designed as a multi-purpose space where the
SPCA could hold holiday parties, business
functions, and sales as needed. The entrance
to the building was then re-designed to
make it clear where visitors should enter. The
lobby and main front office space were
renovated to present a more aesthetic face
to the public: concrete block walls and strip
fluorescent lighting were replaced with
plastered walls, wood slat ceilings, acoustic
panels, and individual pendant lights.
Skylights were also added to open up the
space and brighten the rooms.
